Breast Implant Revision Surgery from a Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Breast implant revision surgery is performed to correct issues after breast implant surgery or implant-based reconstruction surgery. Dr Pouria Moradi has also performed this surgery for women who were unhappy with their previous breast augmentation surgery.
Removing breast implants
Bad breast augmentation is not the only reason breast implants are removed. Health concerns such as breast cancer can require the removal of breast implants. Not because the implants have caused the cancer, but treatment can be more effective after the implants have been removed.
Implant-associated complications include:
- Severe capsular contracture
- Implant Malposition
- Discomfort associated with implants hardening
- Poor Aesthetic Outcome
- Double Bubble Deformity
- Symmastia – Kissing Implants
- Animation Deformity
- Size Changes
A change of lifestyle or cosmetic goals is another reason women choose breast revision surgery. Sometimes this involves removing the implants all together and other times it means a new implant size and/or shape.
Reasons for breast implant revision surgery
Side effects such as asymmetry, implant deflation and breast pain are some of the reasons women undergo breast implant revision surgery. Other reasons include the need to remove breast implants for screening as breast implants can affect mammogram readings.
Implant rupture and calcified silicone leaks can obscure breast cancer on a mammogram. In these cases, not only will the implant need to be removed, the calcified silicone will also need to be excised.
Then there are those who are simply dissatisfied with the results they got the first time around. As a specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Moradi has helped many women through breast revision surgery.

Beauty’s New Normal

On this 4 Corners expose, Dr Moradi discusses the importance of going to a specialist plastic surgeon over a cosmetic surgeon.
What to expect with breast implant revision surgery
The results of surgery should be immediately visible.
The discomfort caused by hardened or rupture implants will be gone—replaced by mild post-surgery discomfort which can be managed by over-the-counter painkillers. Some post-surgery swelling will be present and should go away after a few days. However, exact recovery time will depend on the nature of your breast revision surgery.

Revisional breast augmentation is a big topic because it can mean different things to different patients. Some patients just want their implants to be bigger, some want them smaller. It is actually very simple, easier than a normal breast augmentation because the incision is already there, and the pocket is already created. You simply just need to take the implant out and replace it with a bigger or smaller implant. It is a very straightforward procedure. This is all priced accordingly.
Revisional breast augmentation is not always simple or straightforward. The patient’s anatomy might be difficult which is why it was a difficult surgery in the first place. Other possible complications include the need for a lift, a ruptured implant, a rotated implant or capsular contraction. All of these add to the complexity of the surgery. The best way to imagine the breast tissue is as a brand-new telephone book that you can easily page through. Revision plastic surgery is as though that book was left out in the rain and then dried off. The pages are still able to turn but with a lot more difficulty. The patient’s emotions also play a significant role in these surgeries.
