Breast implant surgery has become an increasingly popular option for women over the years. With advances in technology leaving little to no scarring and realistic looking results, patients walk away happy and more confident after achieving their dream breasts.
However, there can be times when a patient decides to either remove or replace their implants. With Dr Pouria Moradi, this implant removal or replacement is simple.
Other reasons implant removal may be desired include any of the following:
- Implant rupture
- Implant displacement causing breast distortion
- Breast sagging due to the implant weight
- Breast implant illness
- Implants slipping to a lower position
- Unhappiness with the results of original surgeryImplant removal (explants) In those cases where a patient is no longer happy with or no longer wishes to have their augmented breasts, a breast implant removal will be requested. There are three types of removal procedures available:
This entails removal of just the implants making incisions where the old scars are. Ideally, surgeons try to remove the entire capsule (the scar tissue that forms around the implants) to accelerate the body's healing
- Removal of only the implants:
This procedure is identical to the first but also includes a breast lift so that any distortion or stretching that may have occurred with the implants can be corrected. However, should you not want to return to having the original natural breast contour, the removal procedure can be extended to replacement with a new implant.
- Implant removal and breast lift:
This option is only available to those with saline implants. The surgeon may choose to deflate them without surgery which can take place in their office under only local anaesthesia. After this procedure, the patient can choose if they wish to have a breast lift or breast implant replacement surgery.
In the past, implant replacement procedures were most commonly performed to repair the scar tissue that formed around implants or capsules.
With advancements in surgical techniques and implants, the number of issues caused by capsules has declined, meaning replacement surgery is often requested for more than just repair work.
Dissatisfaction with your implants, whether it be with the position, shape, size, texture or simply the need to replace them due to their age, will all require a consultation whereafter Dr Moradi will be able to advise on the best course of action.
Breast implant removal/replacement surgery occurs under general anaesthetic and normally takes only an hour to complete, requiring the patient to stay in hospital for just the day. Surgery patients are able to return to work within 2 to 3 weeks with strenuous exercise and heavy lifting avoided for 6 weeks.
Explant with no replacement
As mentioned before, it is entirely possible to remove your implant without replacing it. Your breasts will be restored back to their original shape and size. It is recommended that the increasingly popular breast lift procedure be combined with the explants, just to ensure that patients are completely happy with the final results.
Recovery time after surgery
Recovery time after breast explants surgery is varied with most patients returning back to work after one to two weeks. You can resume your regular exercise routine within a month.
En Bloc technique
The En Bloc technique is when the entire capsule (scar tissue around the implant) is removed with the implant still inside of it. This all in one removal is ideal and allows the body to heal more easily. However, should this not be possible, the implant is removed first, and the capsule removed thereafter.
