The most popular cosmetic procedures to undergo during winter

The colder months provide an opportunity to undergo a number of cosmetic procedures, allowing your body to recover before showing off the results in summer.

For many people, winter feels like the best time to hibernate and snuggle up rather than exercise or be out and about. Layers of clothing and big coats causes us to take a little less care for our appearances, forgetting that spring and summer are just around the corner. And when the warmer weather does finally make its way around, winter has usually taken its toll in the form of extra weight, dry skin and more apparent rolls that may not have been there before. Here are some of the best plastic surgery procedures and cosmetic treatments to schedule during the winter months.

Why is winter a good time to have work done?

In the colder months we are more inclined to spend time indoors which makes it far easier to recuperate in the warm comforts of your own home.

Winter wardrobes also make it easier for you to hide any post-surgery bandages and temporary swelling during your recovery period. It is also easier to avoid exposure to direct sunlight which is especially beneficial after any facial treatments. And the winter period will allow you to look fabulous by the spring/summer.

Tummy tuck

If you are looking for a flat summer stomach, then now is the best time to consider undergoing a tummy tuck procedure.

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is an operation to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen as well as tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. This is not a weight reduction operation but rather creates an abdominal contour which is smoother and firmer, especially in those cases resistant to diet or exercise. Women who have given birth or any patient who has lost considerable weight are ideal candidates. Winter gives your plenty of time to recover from an abdominoplasty so that you can show off your new look as the temperature begins to rise.

Breast augmentation

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that dramatically enhances and changes the way your body looks. To be an ideal candidate for this procedure you need to have a healthy lifestyle and have the understanding that the implants will dramatically change the appearance of your body. A breast augmentation is ideal to have done during winter because not only will it require at least some time off work, but you will also need to take a break from your regular exercise routine. Time off work to recover is usually around one week and vigorous exercise can usually be resumed after six weeks. It will give you the perfect excuse to stay home and pamper yourself during the chilly weather though!

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty aims to increase or decrease the overall size of the nose, alter the bridge or tip’s shape, narrow the nostrils’ span, or change the angle between the upper lip and the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anaesthetic either as a day case or with an overnight stay. Patients will usually take 1-2 weeks off work. During this recovery time, you will wear a splint down the length of the nose; this is done to support the new shape of your nose. If there is any work done to the septum, internal splints are also placed.

Eyelid rejuvenation

Also referred to as blepharoplasty, cosmetic eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. In the right patient, it rejuvenates your appearance and makes you look more alert and well-rested. The incisions are well concealed in the skin creases of the upper and lower eyelids, with the sutures being removed about one week after your procedure. Due to the extreme thinness of your eyelid skin, you can expect bruising and swelling for up to 3 weeks. You should be able to return to work after seven to 10 days. If you are bothered by the signs of ageing, a blepharoplasty may be right for you.

Neck lift

A neck lift is a surgical procedure to improve the visible signs of ageing in the neck and jawline. In most cases a neck lift is performed along with a facelift as part of a complete facial rejuvenation. However, in the rare situation (usually in younger patients in their 30-50s) where a patient has only sagging of the neck and loss of definition of the jawline, then a neck lift is the perfect operation. The neck lift surgery may take 1-3 hours under general anaesthetic with one night’s hospital stay. Small drains are kept in overnight and removed the morning after the operation. Recovery time is usually two to three weeks, with final results being obvious after about two months. The scars following a neck lift are generally unnoticeable as they are largely concealed within the hairline and hidden in the creases in front and behind the ear.

A good rule of thumb is to consider covering up healing treatments. Undergoing treatments during the winter season when you can stay indoors and get less sun exposure, makes the colder months a good time to undergo any cosmetic work.
